Being Cruel to be Kind

Martial Arts student

Okay, admittedly I don’t literally mean cruel in its definitive sense, but the theory behind the saying I do stand by.

If a Martial Arts student struggles & dislikes a technique or exercise, what would your response be if they avoid it or keep giving up? “never mind, you hate it, you’re not very good at it, you’re way out of your comfort zone so let’s just not do that anymore”

or

“I know you hate this; I know you’re not great at this, but you need to push yourself out of your comfort zone in order to get better.

You have to trust me that you will feel great about this when you achieve it.

The only way to overcome confidence is to work on the things that your bad at, the only way to develop is to deal with the things you struggle with & the only way to beat any opponent is to overcome your weaknesses.

Besides which, I am the instructor, this is what I do, this is what I know works and I know what I’m doing with you. We are going to keep at this until you achieve your goal. You will thank me in the long run!”

Hopefully it’s something like the second response.

And that is where the magic happens.

That’s the difference between having an instructor & trying to teach yourself.

This is what we do for the instructors who are out of their comfort zone with the business side of running a club.

Martial Arts instructors

This is what we do for Martial Arts instructors who are brilliant at what they teach but are way out of their co

mfort zone in making their club more successful, or that worry that if they pay any attention to the financial side, they may be perceived as a “McDojo”.

We say;

“I know you hate the admin & marketing your Martial Arts classes & talking about finances, I know you’re not great at it, but you need to push yourself out of your comfort zone in order to get better.

You have to trust us that you will feel great when you have more students, less admin pressure & feel more financially safe.

The only way to overcome confidence is to work on the things that your bad at, the only way to develop is to deal with the things you struggle with & the only way to beat any competitor is to overcome your weaknesses.

Besides which, we are Martial Arts GB, this is what we do, we know works and we know what we’re doing with you.

We are going to keep at this until you achieve your goal. You will thank us in the long run!”

instructors push people to places to places they didn’t know they could go – this is what we do for instructors

It feels a little cruel to drag someone kicking & screaming into something they don’t want to do, but it’s the kindest thing to do and the most rewarding experience to witness someone achieve their goals.
